Paxton Donates to Local Food Banks

The Brighton based security technology manufacturer Paxton have been donating hundreds of fresh, ready-to-eat meals to local food banks throughout lockdown.
Since the beginning of February, Paxton, an international company headquartered in Brighton & Hove, have been providing up to fifty restaurant-standard meals daily to the following foodbanks: Brighton, Moulsecoomb, Bevendean and Portslade.
Kate Hotson, Paxton’s Projects and Events Manager explains: “We have a fully functional café with a catering team at our Brighton head office. Due to the pandemic most people are currently working from home, so we reached out to local groups to see if we could provide food for those who need it.”
“We are delighted to be providing freshly cooked meals to the local community, the feedback has been amazing. It feels like a great thing to be a part of during these difficult and challenging times.”
Food Banks have become a staple for many families and vulnerable people throughout the pandemic. In a Government report released in February 2021, modelling from The Trussell Trust showed that between March and November 2020, the number of people using Food Banks increased by 61%. They further concluded that this could continue to rise throughout a second wave to 153% compared with the previous year.
Food Banks in the city of Brighton & Hove are continuing to see an increase in the number of people requiring the service. Mike Jourdaine who has been running the Brighton Food Bank for over two years said: “Pre-pandemic we would normally help around 50 clients each week- providing them with fresh food, household essentials and advice. We are now supporting around 150 people weekly.”
“Paxton’s contribution means a lot to our clients as they are receiving the benefit of a well-cooked hot meal. Having someone give them that thought can really make a difference.”
Paxton have also been donating meals to a new organisation called BrightStore. This is a social, not-for-profit community shop, run by local volunteers. The affordable food scheme started during the first wave of the global pandemic; to help support people amid rising unemployment and food bank usage. They rely on donations from local businesses and farms to provide food to people in need through a membership based on what they can afford.
Rachel Pitt-Wick, the founder of BrightStore explains: “Our vision has been to create a long-term sustainable solution that tackles the issues of food waste and inequality. We now have over ninety members which is growing week on week.”
“We are grateful for donations and rely on businesses like Paxton to help us grow with the rising demand. Until now we have not been able to offer a hot meal provision, Paxton providing quality ready-to-heat and eat meals has changed this.”
