Paxton10 Software Update Guide

v4.11 security and performance update

We understand the importance of providing a secure product that you and your customers can trust to secure their premises. That’s why Paxton is continuing to invest in the cybersecurity, reliability, and long-term performance of Paxton10.

To complete the latest security and performance update safely, with minimal impact to the site, Paxton10 requires a valid system backup point stored on the USB backup drive connected to the Paxton10 server.

To check whether a valid backup is available, simply navigate to Options > Backup in the Paxton10 software. If no backups are shown, prepare a USB backup drive using this guide and connect it to the Paxton10 server before running the update.

Check if a system has backups ready for the update

Step 1. Log in to the Paxton10 system as a System Engineer.
Step 2. Navigate to the Options menu.
Step 3. Select the Backup tab.
Step 4. Under the Restore from backup header, open the drop-down list to see available backups.

Valid backups can be identified by their date and timestamp. Please ensure the latest available backup is from an appropriate date and time to ensure your database can be restored in full.

If no backups are shown, follow the Preparing a replacement USB backup drive instructions below.

Preparing a replacement USB backup drive

Recommended USB size: Use a 64GB USB drive where possible, as larger drives have not been tested for this process.

Important: Formatting a USB drive erases the contents of that drive. Check that the correct drive has been selected before continuing.

Step 1. Connect the USB Drive to a Windows PC

Connect the USB drive to a PC running Windows. Open File Explorer.

Step 2. Open the Format option

In File Explorer, right-click the drive associated with the USB stick, then select Format.

(Right-click the USB drive and select Format)

Step 3. Select the File system

In the Format USB Drive window, select NTFS from the File system drop-down list.

(Select NTFS as the file system)

Step 4. Set the Volume label

In the Volume label field, enter DMSBACKUP, then select Start.

(Set the volume label to DMSBACKUP and select Start)

Step 5. Acknowledge the Warning

A warning prompt will appear. Select OK to proceed if you are sure the correct USB Drive has been selected.

(Confirm the format warning)

Step 6. Complete the Formatting of the USB Drive

When the process has finished, a Format Complete prompt appears. Select OK to acknowledge it.

About the v4.11 release

This update includes an important security and performance update, with specific requirements: A valid Paxton10 system backup point is required before this update can complete. Backups are saved to a USB drive connected to the Paxton10 server.

  • If valid backups are already available in Paxton10, the system is ready for this requirement.
  • If no valid backups are available, it likely because the connected USB drive sold with Paxton10 server has been removed. You can prepare a replacement USB backup drive using the steps in this guide.
  • Once the USB drive is connected to the Paxton10 server, backups are generated automatically each night. A manual backup can also be created from the Options menu at any time.

Why this update is important
We are committed to cybersecurity. Paxton continually invests in the security and resilience of Paxton10. As technology standards evolve, we update the platform to help customers benefit from supported components, improved protection, and better long-term maintenance.

This release keeps Paxton10 aligned with current cybersecurity best practice and upcoming compliance expectations. We are updating key underlying technology used by the system, reducing operational risk to support a more secure, future-ready platform.

The update has been designed to minimize disruption for installers and end users. The key preparation step is to confirm that the system has a valid backup available before the update is started, to enable restoration of the database when the software has been updated.
