Paxton sponsors the WorldSkills UK competition at The Security Event
We’re on-site this week at The Security Event in Birmingham, supporting apprentices taking part in the WorldSkills UK Electronic Fire & Security Systems competition, delivered by Skills for Security.
Our UK Training Manager Andy Waller is at the event supporting apprentices throughout the competition and helping to highlight the importance of skills development across the security sector.
Andy said: “It is great to be at The Security Event this week, it’s always a brilliant few days and there’s a real buzz around the competition. You can see it from the apprentices straight away; they’re focused, engaged, and clearly enjoying the challenge.
“For us at Paxton, it’s about backing that energy. We want to support initiatives that give apprentices real opportunities to test themselves, build confidence, and see what they’re capable of in a proper industry setting.”
The WorldSkills UK competition is designed to reflect real industry practice and challenges apprentices to demonstrate their technical ability across installation, commissioning and maintenance tasks in a controlled, high-pressure environment. It provides a valuable opportunity for participants to benchmark their skills against national standards and build confidence working to industry expectations.
The competition covers a range of core technologies found across the sector, including intruder alarms, fire detection systems, life safety systems, video surveillance and access control.
Paxton is proud to be the only dedicated access control partner supporting the competition. Access control plays a key part in the challenge, with apprentices working on the installation, configuration and integration of systems — including Paxton’s Net2 access control system — as part of a wider, fully integrated security solution. It reflects the real-world environment engineers work in, where often multiple technologies need to be installed, programmed and integrated accurately.
Andy said: “The competition really reflects what security installers do day to day — from installing systems and setting out infrastructure, to configuring and testing equipment to make sure everything works as it should.
“What stands out is how it brings together different disciplines and gives apprentices a feel for working in a real industry environment, where attention to detail and getting things right really matters.”
Our involvement is a natural extension of Paxton’s wider commitment to vocational training and skills development. For two consecutive years, we have been a proud sponsor of Skills for Security, supporting initiatives that help address the sector’s skills shortage and create more opportunities for future engineers.
It’s a commitment focused on encouraging practical learning, supporting apprenticeships, and helping young engineers build the skills they need as they progress in the industry.
We wish all competitors the very best of luck at The Security Event this week.
