The Importance of Supporting Local Charities for Businesses and the Community
28th May 2021 – Brighton
The events of the past year have meant a change in approach for many businesses across all sectors. The way they function, and the way we as individuals live our lives has altered.
Charities have not been exempt from this, many have endured difficult times throughout the pandemic and continue to do so, with a number of non-profits across the country diligently trying to continue their work with limited resources. It is more important than ever for businesses that can, to get involved with helping their local charities and communities.
The Clock Tower Sanctuary, a Brighton based charity for homeless 18–25-year-olds, explain: “Local volunteers and fundraisers help to make the centre a welcome refuge for everyone and we couldn’t run our service without their help.”
At Paxton we recognise where there is an opportunity for us to aid our local organisations, and so we have partnered with both the Clock Tower Sanctuary in the UK and Habitat for Humanity – Greenville Chapter in the U.S. Our Aim is to offer as much support as we can to these charities that are right on the doorstep of our Global Head Office and North American Headquarters.
So far in 2021 we have organised an Easter charity day, where employees companywide were able to get involved with themed competitions and activities to raise funds for our charity partners.
We are also embarking on our charity event of the year, called the Around the World Challenge, where Paxton employees from all over the world are walking, running or cycling over 50,000 miles collectively and hitting 33 virtual milestones along the way. These milestones include every country where we have offices or personnel, and every country where we distribute Paxton products.
From a team perspective, we want to generate that feeling of being connected to one other and working together outside of the confines of work life. We are also looking to promote both physical and mental wellbeing for our employees.
You can follow the challenge and donate to the cause on our Charity Event of the Year page.
Kate Hotson, our Project & Events Manager who organises our charity events said: “Supporting local charities is really important to Paxton as we feel that giving back to our community contributes to improving the lives of those we support. It gives our staff a sense of achievement when fundraising together as a team and educates us all about the work they do and the positive impact they have.”
Other initiatives we have introduced to support the local community include:
- Donations of freshly prepared meals to a number of Sussex foodbanks and the non-profit community shop based in Brighton, BrightStore. They help to support people with food and advice amid rising unemployment and foodbank usage.
- Volunteer gardening at Moulsecoomb Primary School and Moulsecoomb Forest Garden and Wildlife Project.
- Pre-pandemic initiatives included quiz nights and football tournaments, which we’re keen to get back to when restrictions ease.
- In recent years our annual charity event included the Brighton Marathon, Paddle Round the Pier, Tough Mudder and the Trailwalker Challenge.
We hope to continue raising as much money and awareness as possible for our chosen charities throughout the rest of 2021.
